An expedition that set out from the city of Ukek has arrived in Narovchat — the district center of the Penza region — with the goal of studying the remains of the ancient city of Mokhsha. Narovchat is home to a museum dedicated to the region’s history, with a major section focusing specifically on the city of Mokhsha. At one time, a large mosque was discovered at this site, and its remnants — stone blocks — were transported to the museum and displayed for the general public. Today, the territory of the ancient city is fully used for agriculture — former city quarters are now planted with wheat and legumes. In recent years, archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology of the Republic of Tatarstan have taken an interest in the site, launching serious scientific research. This year, they completed another stage of excavations, during which they discovered a large Golden Horde–era estate, presumably owned by a woman. It is known that Uzbek Khan — one of the rulers of the Golden Horde — lived in Mokhsha for about eight years. He minted his coins here. Archaeologists have also discovered coins at the site that belonged to other Horde khans. In the future, archaeologists from Kazan plan to create an open-air museum at the site. As a sign of cooperation and scholarly exchange, scientists from the Saraychik Museum-Reserve presented the director of the Narovchat Museum with their academic publications.
