Scientists from the Saraychik Museum-Reserve visited the settlement of Lapas in the Astrakhan region, where, together with Astrakhan-based scholars and archaeologists V. Plakhov and E. Pigarev, they studied the results of excavations of a large mausoleum carried out last year at the Lapas necropolis. A mausoleum of this scale has never before been encountered in the territory of Eurasia. Its walls are 2.80 meters thick and made of fired red brick. The structure measures 45 by 45 meters. According to the researchers, the mausoleum may be the burial site of the famous Golden Horde Khan — Uzbeg Khan. Russian scientists plan to continue the excavations this year.
