Summary of the "Saraishyk" Museum-Reserve's Achievements in 2024

  1. In 2024, the medieval site of Saraishyk was successfully preserved from unprecedented flooding.
  2. For the first time, museum-reserve scientists conducted archaeological excavations across four locations (excavation sites No. 2 and No. 6 at medieval Saraishyk, Karagaily, and Ashysay settlements) covering 2,400 square meters.
  3. A Golden Horde mosque and an industrial site have been discovered at the location of the Qaragaily settlement.
  4. A Golden Horde residential area has been identified at the site of the Ashysai settlement.
  5. Anthropological and genetic research was conducted at the excavation sites. The studies involved Maksat Zhabagin, PhD, head of the Human Genetics Laboratory at the National Center for Biotechnology, as well as Aikumis Raisova, a physical anthropologist, bioarchaeologist, and PhD candidate at Durham University (UK), and a member of the governing committee of the Steppe Sisters organization.
  6. Ten scientific samples of anthropological material were sent to a laboratory in Vilnius, Lithuania, for radiocarbon dating, which determined their ages.
  7. The "Kazkaitazhangartu" RSE has completed the construction of the fortress wall at the western gate of the medieval monument. Inside the building, facilities include a souvenir shop, a dining area, and restrooms.
  8. The "Kazkaitazhangartu" RSE has initiated the "Open-Air Exhibition" project at the site of the medieval monument.
  9. Our colleague has been awarded the Order of "Qurmet" Order by a decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
  10. The museum-reserve’s Deputy Director, Master Zh. Diyarova, participated in a U.S. Central Asia museum exchange program through the "Meridian" International Center in collaboration with the U.S. Mission to Kazakhstan, spending three weeks in the United States.
  11. A monograph titled "Medieval Saraishyk: Historical Records, Archaeology, Numismatics, Cartography" and two articles were published in high-impact SCOPUS journals.
  12. Staff members undertook academic mobility programs at the Institute of Archaeology named after A. Kh. Khalikov in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia.
  1. Under scientific projects, 102 individuals were temporarily employed for the Saraishyk excavations, with a total payout of 35.347 million KZT, including 79 unemployed or temporarily inactive residents of Saraishyk village.
  2. For the first time, medieval Saraishyk artifacts were displayed to the public in Astana at The National Military Historical Museum of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan for one month.
  3. The museum-reserve signed cooperation agreements with museum-reserves and research institutes in Russia, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan.
  4. A national conference titled "Saraishyk and the Medieval World of Eurasia" was held in Saraishyk with the participation of national and international scholars, and its proceedings were published.
  5. History students from Khalel Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University and M. Utemisov West Kazakhstan State University underwent archaeological training at the medieval Saraishyk site.
  6. A unique architectural structure—a mausoleum, or "korkhana"—was discovered at the medieval Saraishyk excavation site.
  7. In 2024, the museum-reserve organized 49 exhibitions in online and offline formats.
  8. The museum-reserve attracted 17,786 tourists in 2024.
  9. The museum-reserve's website and social media pages garnered 517,721 views in 2024.
